Exhorting excellence in Extra-Curriculars

Extracurricular activities have always been that necessary component of a well-rounded education – outside the regular academic curricula – that positively impact students’ pursuit of knowledge and career. Our motto, therefore, is ‘Exhorting Excellence in Extra-Curriculars’. Some of the many benefits which such activities lead to are holistic and all-round development, raising self-esteem and better time management. Our activities range from crosswords, quiz contests, debates, book reading and vocabulary-building among others. A not-for-profit-organisation, Extra-C was born on June 26, 2013 and since then has become a byword for quality in terms of providing a platform for quality extracurricular pursuits. Of many activities, Extra-C’s focus has been to promote crosswords as a learning tool among the young and the adult.

Cryptic Crossword Contest (CCCC)

Results of our efforts to put crosswords at the centre of the school co-curricular calendar have been encouraging. The idea of a national-level inter-school cryptic crossword contest that we experimented with in 2013 was appreciated and has become the most awaited annual event for a large number of schools across the length and breadth of India. A two-stage offline event, it comprises a preliminary round in cities and a Grand Finale in the national capital towards the year-end. The winning school team lifts the national Crossword Champion trophy.

A clue a day

Perseverance is the key to achieve perfection in anything. And it has to be inculcated early in life. A-Clue-A-Day (ACAD) is a daily online crossword challenge hosted on www.crypticsingh.com for school students. It has been designed to help students learn and hone solving cryptic crosswords. On popular demand, two tougher versions of the same contest – ACAD+ and ACAD Senior – have been started for students of higher education institutes and those above 60 years of age, respectively. All three run year-long and there are monthly prizes for top performers.

Indian Crossword League (IXL)

This is yet another individual competitive platform for crosswords, unique in its concept, which is primarily meant for mature enthusiasts of the mind game across the globe. It is played in an online-offline format, where 10 online weekly rounds hosted on www.crypticsingh.com zero in on 30 top performers ranked on a cumulative Leaderboard who then go into an offline Grand Finale in Bengaluru. The winner lifts the National Crossword Champion trophy. In its effort to engage the bright diaspora, the contest has been to Toronto and New Jersey as well.
