  1. Heartiest congratulations to all the top ten qualifiers.Wishing them the very best for the Grand Finale. I would thank the organizers for opening the rounds on a Sunday since Saturday is a working day for people like me. Thoroughly enjoyed the contest though ending up on 39th place.

The organizers should look into the feed-backs given by the participants to maintain the interest of all the participants for all the rounds. Many of them have stopped after few rounds thinking they do not have a chance to qualify for the grand finale. The organizers could inform before opening the contest , the rules regarding awarding marks.

    Awaiting IXL 2015.

  2. After the final round, I stand at No.60 on the leader board with a score of 416. Since I last many valuable points due to single letter errors, I do not consider my final score as all that bad. What I am eager to know is, can I attend the Finale at Bangalore on Dec 21 as an observer? The day happens to be my birthday ( 85th)!

  3. hey! thrilled at seeing my name on 90. I had two aims – one to average out 50 per round and get 500 overall. I did that with 560and wanted dto be top 10 in atleast one round. just missed that by one. but being 90 was a good achievement.

  4. Congrats to the toppers (especially the amazingly consistent Mohsin!). It was fun being a part of this IXL, and I hope to be back again next year 🙂

  5. Hindu Crossword Corner Blog of Sunday, 16th November 2014 has let the cat out of the bag. Only 14 all-correct entries in IXL Round 9! Perhaps, Mangalore became the missile which surprisingly went unnoticed and devastated a massive 19 out of 20 Bangaloreans (including 1 Bengalurun) as also many Chennaiyins! Amazingly. the score of the first Bangalorean with an error which would have actually been zero, was as high as 80!

  6. Although the decision of the organisers should be final and binding upon the participants (I am one of them), still I am curious to know how they have fared as per the actual rule of the competition of getting zero for an incorrect completed entry.

  7. I feel the participation is important. Good, if one comes top. No major problem if one is not able to get in the top 10 position. I have myself made several typing errors like INA for IMA, MONET for MANET that pulled my scores down. But, I am happy participating and scoring a few as well….thank you all for having this contest!

  8. Had trouble submitting the completed puzzle – the site seemed to hang for about 10 minutes (from around 11:26am), and then showed me my entry as it was about 5 “SAVE”s ago! I had to key in the remaining responses again and then hit SUBMIT a second time, and it went through this time. Did anyone else have this problem?

  9. IXL- INDIAN CROSSWORD LEAGUE

IXL-Indian Crossword League launched in 2013, was to
Commemorate the Birth Centenary of Crosswords. It
Reached across India to a Grand opening setting off
Obsessive zeal amongst the solvers and setters with
Such fervor that everybody was anxious to outscore.
Stupendous success of the format and programme
Was so huge that everybody waited with bated breath.
Overnight fanatics to octogenarians all competed with
Relentless energy and acumen to complete the puzzle.
Diligently solving the current rounds with renewed zest.

Lapsus calami would result in a blob, and the right word
Ensured the participant to score a perfect ten when
All the clues were decoded and nailed to fill the grid.
Great sense of joy would erupt upon seeing the results
Unfolded the next week, making it the most awaited quiz,
Exercising the brain to figure the innuendos & conundrums.

  10. The answer for 5 down is shown as MANGALORE which is fine.
But my argument is “BANGALORE” also fits the annotation and anagram of BEAR, ALONG.
    Please clarify.
    Regards

    • Nagendra Prasad,
For BANGALORE you have to use BEAR in which case it becomes an indirect anagram. Whereas MARE fits in without any readjustment of the letters

      • I am still not convinced Sir.
Where is “THE DIFFICULTY” if MARE fits easily.
The clue can be read both ways:
        1. City “ANIMAL GETS ALONG” with difficulty.
        2. City animal gets “ALONG” with difficulty.

    • I too started out with Bangalore, but there was no anagram indicator for the animal (to turn BEAR into BARE). That’s when it became clear that the answer must be Mangalore (MARE getting “ALONG with difficulty”).

  11. The solutions for the Week 9 ended have been uploaded. I was surprised to know the answer for
6 Down as “FALLOW” instead of “TALLOW”.
The annotation given for FAT suggests the word as TALLOW.
The word FALLOW for my knowledge does not mean anything closer to FAT- it actually means – A ploughed land but not sown.
    Can somebody clarify?

  12. Hi,

I’m trying to contact the organizers, but the website is throwing up an error message. Is there a mail address that I can write to?

    Thanks,
    Lahar

  13. Hi participants!
Inviting everybody to solve this quick puzzle:

After round 6, one Mr./Ms YELL YESS from Abc city finds a place In the OVERALL LEADERBOARD ,with 13 points although his/her name does not appear in any of the rounds.

  14. My request to the organizers

    1. Kindly publish/display the time and date of submission of entries
as recorded by the system, against all all-correct entries.

    2. Kindly clarify once and for all, the system of awarding points/marks:
    a. whether incorrect entries are given points?
if yes, what points are given to suppose 100 entries received
with one wrong answer at different intervals.?

    3. What is the least time taken in any round for submitting an all-correct entry?

  15. Hi, I have a doubt about this round’s solutions – but the contact button on the server gives a runtime error. Whom should I contact?

  16. Two mistakes – SNOB for KNOB in round 4 & DISH for DOSA in round 6, has cost me dearly and proved disastrous for me. I would have dropped about 80 marks taking into consideration the time I submitted in both rounds. Tough, Ruthless,Disappointing and painful — cant digest the fact that I missed two sitters.
I empathise with Mr.Kishore. M who, I think is in the same boat. Common Mr.Kishore, I think you are a real Top Ten Material and still can make it.

  17. My suggestions for the organizers:
    1. The webmaster is requested to display the timestamp for all all-correct entries.
    2. Only all-correct entries should be given points and others should not find a place on the leaderboard. 156 hours are not enough or what?

  18. The webmaster is requested to display the timestamp for all all-correct entries.
Only all-correct entries should be given points and others should not find a place on the leaderboard. 156 hours are not enough or what?

  19. Another suggestion. Why not have a running counter for each round which displays the no. of correct entries received as of now. This might remove the tension over the entire week

  20. How to know how many all correct entries were received in each round? I suggest an asterisk mark may be highlighted against the name of the last person with all correct answers. This will help in assessing the difficulty level of each round.

  21. My consolidated total for the five rounds is wrong. Not that it will affect my chances of making it to the finalists’ group.

  22. I joined the IXL14 only from Round 4. Scored 23 in Round 4 and 70 in Round 5 (despite getting all correct but then I must have been the 31st in submitting my answers)… but the overall Leader board shows my score as 92 instead of 93… Am I missing something? or if it needs to be corrected how do I get it done?

  23. Why are comments not being updated. I have sent at least 3 comments on the scoring system which have not been posted. I do not know if they are being received and cutoff because they are critical or they are not being updated due to some system problem. Also the link to the contact page is not functioning

  24. In round 4, I liked the clue – Alternate sign found in Baltimore (3). Even though at first glance itself I got LTI as answer with cutting letters L and I already being there, I was hesitant to put the answer for nearly 90 minutes till I was satisfied with the anno. I finally realized LTI also stands for LEFT THUMB IMPRESSION which is alternate to signature. Nice clue. Enjoyed it. Would have been easier had the enu been given as 1,1,1 instead of 3 at the initial stage itself.

  25. Why not have a system of awarding points for every correct answer and select the finalists on the basis of total points scored? I think it would be more thrilling to be in the race till the concluding rounds. The present system is like a ‘do or die’ situation, a single wrong letter can be disastrous…

  26. there seems to be some discrepancy in the total given in total leaderboard as compared to total of all rounds. At least 20 names have final totals more than the individual sums. What system of scoring is used.
The most glaring example is of Vinod Raman who did not submit in the first round and his total after the next threes is an impressive 295. (99 97 99) but the leaderboard give his total as 340. What is the logic behind this scoring system.

    • Chitra,
I think initially in Round 1 marks were given only for all correct answers, subsequently based on feedback they started giving marks even for wrong answers after the all correct ones were marked, therefore to bring everyone at par those who were initially left out in Round 1 due to wrong answers must have been given marks later that’s how the leaderboard position got shuffled

      • Deepak, if is so then some entries have got a jump of more than 50 which is not possible by counting only the first round scores. All in all there are about 40 such entries which have got a jump.

  27. This time the organisers could perhaps invite entrants who have scored over a certain specified mark (say, 60 per cent of total) so that there is a sizable number of finalists.

  28. 20 Down – Clue > Upcoming bank has nothing for a Boss
My Answer >>SNOB ie BNS – Bank of Nova Scotia has O, in reverse direction – S N O B – who is a Haughty headed BOSS
The correct solution shown is KNOB.

    Regards,
    R.Nagendra Prasad

    • Nagendra, the annotation is to replace A with O (nothing for A) in BANK reversed. BNS would not work because the reference is too vague.

  29. (I am posting this here because trying to use the “Contact Us” feature throws up an error message.)

In the puzzle posted last week (28 Sep), the solution for 1ac is given as AGRA. The clue read: City auditor detects an end-of-ledger interpolation (4). I had solved it as ACRA – ACA (for auditor) with R (end of ledger) interpolated; ACRA is a city in New York.

I am not sure why my entry is wrong. If the wordplay and definition fit two different solutions equally well, and the difference happens to be in an unch, I would argue that both options need to be accepted as correct.

    • Abahy: Auditor=AG, an =a end of ledger=r, ar interpolation is RA.
Nagendra: upcoming bank=KNAB, nothing=o for a makes it KNOB which has a head and boss=head.
yes I agree that methodology of scoring needs to be explained now that entries with few wrong letters ( but you don’t know upto how many) are getting scores and the time of submission should also be mentioned with the score.

      • Pankaj: I get the logic for AGRA, I am simply saying that ACRA fits equally well, since ACA is as valid as AG for the clue “auditor”. I don’t agree that “ar interpolation is RA” – interpolation does not mean reversal.

  30. Meena,
To the best of my knowledge marks are being given for those with 1 or 2 wrong letters after the all correct entries are marked.

  31. Seconding Anish’s suggestion: Could you also publish the details of no. of correct answers, and the time of submission, for the toppers in the leaderboard?

  32. How come round 1 had only 50 odd rankings. whereas round 1 has much more. I got on wrong on both these but was on the leaderboard only in round 2.

  33. One more suggestion. Just like some exams, could you not have a system of negative marking for the wrong answers and still have some credit to the participant. After the correct entries have been given credits, there are places left on the leaderboard. The participants with one/two wrong answers could still be awarded points based on time submitted and negative marks for the wrong answers, instead of a complete zero.

  34. How come round 1 had only 50 odd rankings. but round 2 has much more. I got one wrong in both but showed up on the leaderboard only in round 2. Did they start grading on no. of correct answers + time taken after round 1. and only full correct answers in round 2

  35. Anish,
I don’t think that is required because if you see the leaderboard of IXL-2013 there are some who made it to the top 10 despite having missed out in a particular round. If I am not wrong I think I too scored 0 in one round

  36. am new to this and am glad to participate, regardless. but here is a thought. many of us work on this in different ways, sometimes in between tasks too. so should we not reserve the timed contests to offline events? also i think i got all but one right in Round 1 but don’t see my name on the leaderboard. yes i submitted near the deadline but could there be any other reason?

  37. A request to IXL organisers: Turning off the contest after the IXL finals, as it happened last year, creates a kind of void. Please think in terms of launching something similar on the pattern of ACAD for seniors. Ideal time of putting the clue may be in the morning and limit the hours (say 12 hrs) after which answer should be posted. It would be a good exercise to keep the crossword buffs engaged and connected.

  38. Great job organisers…just a few suggestions if implementable: –
    (a) Would it be possible to show the time taken by each contestant, or at least the top ten, alongside the leaderboard entries?
    (b) Would the finalists be selected based on the highest cumulative scores for all the rounds? In that case can the final leaderoard be drawn up based on the top 8 or 9 scores of each contestants to ensure that everybody gets a fair chance since many participants may once or twice miss out on accessing the crossword at dot 11 AM every sunday ( or as soon as the puzzle comes online) for 10 consecutive weeks due to some other unavoidable commitments. A delay of 1hr or 2hr due to extraneous factors may be the difference between making the final or missing out. This will also help those who may be affected due to power outages and/or broadband issues once in a while ( not an unlikely scenario in India…)

  39. Narayan if you submitted a correct answer you should be on the leaderboard answers were being accepted till 11PM on the 20th. I suggest you log in and check the solution where your submission will be shown alongside the correct solution.

  40. another query on the same lines. I had finished the grid 100% last time but submitted on 15th. my name is not on the leader board however. How is the rating done

  41. Congratulations to all…

Have a query. Since time is considered, is it based on first submission (who submits 100% grid first) or is it total time taken to complete the xword (based on login time)..thanks srividya
